The OnePlus 5 was launched in India at an event in Mumbai. The launch will be followed by pop up events in four cities, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad. In case you missed the launch, you can watch it right here:
The phone has a 64 GB variant with 6 GB of RAM and a 128 GB variant with 8 GB of RAM. The RAM used is the LPDDR4X, which allows for 20 percent more battery efficiency. The phone is powered by a top of the line Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor clocked at 2.4 GHz. The CPU consumes 40 percent less power because of the new 10 nanometer manufacturing process. The display is a 5.5 inch screen protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The screen resolution is not in line with the other high specifications, and is a 1080p HD display. The fingerprint scanner unlocks the device in 0.2 seconds. The battery is rated at 3300 mAh, and has the signature feature of OnePlus, the Dash Charge. The company claims that the battery charges quickly enough to provide “a day’s power in half an hour.” There is now a reading mode for long reading sessions, that is easier on the eyes.
There are dual cameras on the back. One of the main cameras is 20 MP with an aperture of F/2.6, and other is 16 MP with an aperture of F/1.7. This is one of the widest apertures in smartphone cameras, allowing for faster photographs, and better results in low light. The cameras allow for a bokeh like effect for capturing superior portraits. The selfie shooter is also 16 MP. OnePlus really focused on the cameras with this iteration of its flagship. According to early reviews, the cameras were disappointing according to reviews of the device, and so was the screen resolution. However the specifications are on the higher side considering the price point, and the 8GB of RAM allows the phone to perform well no matter which app is thrown at it.
The phone will be available in Midnight Black and Slate Gray at launch, which indicates that more colour variations may be available down the line. The phones are priced at Rs 32,999 and Rs 37,999 in India. The prices are along the lines of an anonymous tip received by True-tech.net and a leaked poster for Amazon India. The device will be sold exclusively on Amazon, and will be available from 4:30 PM on 22 June.
